New Shingles Around Roof Vent

Vent flashing is a cylindrical piece of flashing that fits right around the vent. The shingles are installed over the base or boot. This aluminum cap is the finished product and does not require. Repair is costlier on a per square foot basis because it is more time consuming to integrate new shingles into a roof here and there than to install them over the entire roof.

However on the roof of my outbuilding and the roof of my parents house i noticed that the shingles at the bottom edge of the vent are filled in over the lower part of the flange cut around the profile of the vent. Reuse a vent or flashing only if it is like new. Figure 1 install shingles just below vent pipe. Press new shingles onto the caulk and use nails at the top of each shingle to fully secure them to the roof.

To level out an existing asphalt shingle roof rip down reduce the height of two courses of shingles as shown in the drawing below. A shingle over vent is installed over the ridge of a roof and is covered over by asphalt shingle caps that match the surrounding roof shingles. If more than about 35 of your roof is going to need repair due to wind or hail especially if it s already 12 years old the cost effective decision might be to replace it all. Remove air vents and pipe flashings by prying out or unscrewing the fasteners holding the fixture. Leave the old valley flashing in place and install new over it. Otherwise replace it with a new one that will fit the hole or pipe. An aluminum ridge vent has a mushroom shaped profile combined with a wide flange on both sides that sits on top of the roof shingles.

Continuous or individual soffits. Pull the old flashing up over the vent pipe and scrape any old caulk and debris off the roof. If you damage shingles while doing this repair the shingles see next step. Slip a flat bar under the edge of the vent flashing and pop the nails up photo 1.

Glue down shingles to cover the bottom of the vent. Use some asphalt roof cement under the cut shingle and around. They are easy to install under the roof s overhang which is known as the soffit are generally hidden from sight and provide excellent protection from weather outdoor debris and pests while still allowing air to flow into the attic. Apply the last row of shingles that is just below the vent pipe as shown in figure 1.

Cover the entire flange with shingles to integrate it better into the roof. Slide the new flashing over the vent pipe and under the shingles above the pipe. Apply the roofing felt on the roof cutting a hole for the vent pipe. Continue the next row of shingles cutting a hole for the vent pipe.
